Semantics, ontologies and eScience for the geosciences
نویسندگان
چکیده
Semantics, ontologies and eScience are key areas of research that aim to deal with the growing volume, number of sources and heterogeneity of geoscience data, information and knowledge. Following a workshop held at the eScience Institute in Edinburgh on the 7–9th of March 2008, this paper discusses some of the significant research topics and challenges for enhancing geospatial computing using semantic and grid technologies. & 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Managing the Deluge of Scientific Data
Provenance information in eScience is metadata that's critical to effectively manage the exponentially increasing volumes of scientific data from industrial-scale experiment protocols. Semantic provenance, based on domain-specific provenance ontologies, lets software applications unambiguously interpret data in the correct context. The semantic provenance framework for eScience data comprises e...
متن کاملDeep Semantics in the Geosciences: semantic building blocks for a complete geoscience infrastructure
In the geosciences, the semantic models, or ontologies, available are typically narrowly focused structures fit for single purpose use. In this paper we discuss why this might be, with the conclusion that it is not sufficient to use semantics simply to provide categorical labels for instances—because of the interpretive and uncertain nature of geoscience, researchers need to understand how a co...

Background and Aim: Ontologies facilitate data integration, exchange, searching and querying. Open Biomedical Ontologies (OBO) Foundry is a solution for creating reference ontologies. In this foundry, the design of ontologies is based on established principles which allow for their interactions as a single system. The purpose of this study is to determine the main features of ontologies develop...

متن کاملWPS orchestration using the Taverna workbench: The eScience approach
eScience is an umbrella concept which covers internet technologies, such as web service orchestration that involves manipulation and processing of high volumes of data, using simple and efficient methodologies. This concept is normally associated with bioinformatics, but nothing prevents the use of an identical approach for geoinfomatics and OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) web services like WP...
